The community of San Diego relies on fire hydrants to help put out fires, keeping people and property safe. To ensure that the hydrants work when they are needed, the San Diego Fire Department regularly inspects them. In this lesson, you'll help complete the inspections. Acting as a few different members of the City of San Diego and the San Diego Fire Department, you'll create and manage hydrant inspection assignments and complete that work in the field. Your goal is to make sure that the fire hydrants around the convention center are all inspected before the end of summer.
First, you'll serve as the GIS administrator for the city of San Diego. In that role, one of your jobs is to support the efforts of the Fire Department by providing geographic data to facilitate its projects. One of the upcoming projects is inspecting fire hydrants. You already have the fire hydrant data. You'll create a Workforce project to manage the work as it's completed in the field. You'll define the types of work done in the project and assign dispatchers and mobile workers their roles. The fire captain of each firehouse dispatches their firefighters (the mobile workers). The firefighters inspect and report back on the hydrants.
Once the project is ready, your role will change to the fire captain with the San Diego Fire Department. As a fire captain, one of your jobs is to manage hydrant inspections by creating and assigning the assignments for to firefighters to complete. You'll use the Workforce project to manage assignments and monitor the inspections as the firefighters work in the field.
Your final role will be as a firefighter with the San Diego Fire Department. Your fire captain has assigned you some hydrant inspections, so you'll make sure that the hydrants will work when you need them. Your fire captain is managing your work with a Workforce project, so you'll use the mobile app to view and complete your assignments. You'll also use Navigator to route to the hydrants that you're assigned to inspect.
